The Pointer Sisters Slow Hand (UK TV APPEARANCE 1981)

Today being Valentines Day I thought I'd play a song regarded by many as the most romantic song ever written ( by Michael Clark and John Bettis). This is a threesome/foursome which has long been a favourite of mine, The Pointer Sisters from Oakland California. Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June were the daughters of strict parents who called Rock and Roll the Devil's music. Father was a minister in fact! Out of parent's watchful eye Bonnie and June formed a twosome to be joined by Anita and Ruth . In the early days they did not have the budget for expensive clothes for the stage so they shopped in thrift shops and hence adopted a classic smart 1940s look which I think was their best look of all! They had a vast range of musical styles including Pop, Disco, Jazz, Electronic, Blues, soul, Funk, Rock, and country. In the latter guise they were the first black female group to perform at The Grand Ole Opry! They have received three Grammy awards and are rated 32nd on the Billboard Hot 100. Bonnie left in 1978 to go solo and did some work with Motown. June left in 2004 after a struggle with drug abuse and died of cancer in 2006 sadly. Sadly too Bonnie died in 2020. June's place was taken by Ruth's daughter Issa and in 2009Ruth's grand daughter Sadako Pointer joined to make four again, but the normally rotated as a threesome.
