Ruby Turner born in 1958 in Montego Bay Jamaica moved to Birmingham UK with her family at age 9.In the 1980s she sang with Culture Club at the height of their success. Her first solo contract was with Jive Records and many albums resulted to great acclaim in the UK and in the USA. She has done session work with people like Brian Ferry, UB40, Steel Pulse, Steve Winwood, Jools Holland and Mick Jagger. She has also sung Motown work of the Four Tops, Jimmy Ruffin and the Temptations. On New Years Eve 1999 she sang the National anthem to Queen Elizabeth and her party at the opening of the Millenium Dome. From 2007 to the present she has been on Jools Holland's Hootenanny. In 2012 she accompanied Jools on a stage outside Buckingham Palace for the Queen's 60th anniversary celebrations. In 2016 she was on the Queen's honours list and became Dame Ruby Turner MBE for her service to music. As an actress she has appeared on stage with productions of Fame, Streetcar Named Desire and Carmen Jones. Films include Love Actually, Reggae Britannica, and Famous Fred. She also narrated a BBC4 documentary on British Reggae. She released her first Gospel album in 2013 and appeared as a guest judge on a BBC Gospel competition. She was engaged twice but never married. Here she performs the big Etta James hit live. I would classify this as Deep Soul.
