Paul Brown :Live w/ Ann Peebles @ STAX RIP Randy Middleton...

Ever since first discovering Ann Peebles she has been a living representation of what Soul music is all about for me. When one watches her perform live like this you are seeing Soul coming into being. With just a smile or a glance she can convey more emotion and meaning than a thousand words! And that is Soul. It's always so great to get a new live performance from her.

We Had It All

One of my favourite singers, Candi Staton, with a song penned by Dolly Parton. This is on her Complete FAME studios compilation( Florence Alabama Music Enterprises). Being born in Hanceville Alabama I think gave her just the right voice to be singing about the wind blowing through the Georgia pines.

Candi Staton " Victim " ( Version Disco)

Candi Staton with one of her biggest hits. This my introduction to this very versatile singer some years ago! Definitely Disco!

Candi Staton - Hallelujah Anyway (Larse Vocal) [Full Length] 2012

Candi , the way she sounded after a dramatic life change. No more alcohol and the life that went with it.

Esther Phillips sings Billie Holiday live !!!

The incomparable Esther Phillips at an evening of tribute to the late Billie Holiday In 1978 at the Hollywood Bowl.

Make Me Believe You'll Stay

I came across Margie Joseph about a year back but didn't really get down to listening closely. What a great voice and style she has!

Medicine Bend

Margaret Marie Joseph was born in 1950 in Gautier Mississippi and studied drama at Dillard University there. In 1967 a demo at Muscle Shoals Studios led to a deal with Okeh label. In 1969 she moved to Volt, a subsidiary of Stax and produced two albums. After transferring to Atlantic she became compared to Aretha Franklin. Then at Cotillion she hit the charts with a Lamont Dozier production. She left music at this stage and became a teacher but a return to Cotillion produced a #12 RnB.In 2006 she released a Gospel album and remains active today, 2023. Concerning this track I believe Medicine Bend Is a town in South Western USA associated with a Native American settlement. Up tempo at 125 BPM!

Stop! In The Name Of Love

This was one of the biggest hits for The Supremes, in the various lineups of that group. Here a somewhat more Soul style is done by Margie Joseph.

My World Is Empty Without You

Margie Joseph with a dramatic and haunting version of a Motown classic.

I'd Rather Go Blind

Margie puts her stamp on this song which was a big hit for Etta James and also for Ruby Turner.

One Day I'll Fly Away - Vesta Williams (1984)

Vesta again with a song that is strongly associated with Randy Crawford. Written by Joe Sample. This is a great version!
