Yesterday was the 95th anniversary of the birth of #DonnaHightower in Carruthersville Missouri ,the daughter of Sharecroppers. By 23 she had been married and divorced with two children and was working as a waitress when a newsman heard her singing and won her a contract with Decca Records. She was classed as an RnB, Soul and Jazz singer and did much work with small Jazz ensembles. She toured the USA with people like B.B. King, Johnny Mathis and Della Reese. In the early sixties she performed in England, France and Sweden with the likes of Quincy Jones and The Platters. She settled in France then Belgium and finally Spain where she was highly appreciated for he recordings in Spanish. Este Mundo es un Conflicto (This World Today is a Mess) was an international hit. In the accompanying clip she reminds me a bit of Sarah Vaughan, that is sassy (Sassy was Sarah's nickname). I like the way her facial expression and body language match the words! Also notice how the video lights up at 0.55 when it goes close up on Donna! In 1990 she returned to the USA to live in semi retirement in Austin. Her final performance was in 2006 at the Spanish Jazz Festival. She died in 2013. RIP Donna.
